This is what makes the 700R4 transmission so efficient. There's no heavy direct drum that spins at three times the engine speed in first gear, and then comes to a complete stop in second gear, and then speeds back up in high gear (3rd) to engine speed. To me all of this sounds like alot of parasitic drag the 700R4 doesn't have. Couple this with the 2.66 to 1 first gear planet sets coming up in the near future and the titanium input drum coming later that tested to almost 1000 foot pounds of torque, and all of this will result in the 700R4 being one of the strongest, light weight and efficient transmissions around.

700R4 Transmission - Level Three |
This transmission comes with a high performance Superior intermediate billet servo that has 35% more holding power than a Corvette servo. It will give a firmer 1-2 and 2-3 shift. It also has a high performance Superior overdrive billet servo with 50% more holding power than the stock overdrive servo. This servo gives a firmer 3-4 shift. This 700R4 has 8 Red Eagle clutches and full thickness Kolene steels in the 3-4 clutch drum. Our 700R4 comes with the Mega Valve and an oversize low / reverse boost valve, these two valve produce higher pressure and firmer shifts. All of our high performance 700R4 transmissions come with a 13 vane high performance / high volume pump. We use an Alto Carbonite PowerBand with thicker hardened anchors that holds in second and overdrive. Also included in the price is a heavy-duty balanced stall converter with furnace brazed fins, a Sonnax carbon fiber clutch and needle bearing for added strength. This torque converter can be ordered with stall speeds of 1800, 2000, 2300, 2600 or 2800 RPM (#2). Some of the other features are a 30 spline input shaft, "The Beast" reaction shell, special Transgo separator plate if needed, elevated pressure regulator spring, extra wide sun gear bushing, extra wide rear stator support bushing, performance 1-2 accumulator spring, high output pump slide spring, special intermediate servo release check valve, Corvette governor if needed and a 29 element heavy-duty Borg Warner forward input sprag. Also included in this package deal is a throttle valve cable, dipstick and tube, and an automatic converter lock-up switch. Compare all of these features with any other 700R4 on the market. Why pay this much or more without getting all of the good parts? Over-all this is the best 700R4 on the market at the best price. I have one in my one ton Suburban with 463 cubic inches and 455 foot pounds of torque. I pull a 5,500 pound trailer in overdrive all the time. The transmission has been in use for 7 years now with no problems. The 700R4 has a 3.06 ratio in first gear, which is 20% lower than most transmissions. The 30% overdrive will give a 30 to 40% increase in gas mileage on the road over a 3 speed transmission. This transmission is for any type high performance / heavy duty use up to 600 horse power / 450 torque (600 with Torque Drive package) using pump gasoline. See ratings chart below. This is the transmission that couldn't be built until now, because the parts weren't available. As the 700R4 transmission becomes more and more popular, stronger parts come on the market. This transmission has every heavy duty / high performance part on the market plus all of the tricks we've learned in our sixteen years of building high performance / heavy duty 700R4 transmissions. This is the strongest 700R4 transmission that can be built bar-none. If it doesn't have it, it can be added as an extra. Here are some of the parts that come as standard on the 700 Mega Raptor. You get everything that comes with the 700 Raptor plus the Torque Drive Package, Torque Master Package and the five pinion OEM GM planet gears. This transmission is good for any type of heavy duty / performance use up to 700 horse power / 700 foot pounds of torque using pump gasoline, 4WD, towing, street rods, drag racing, big block, one tons and others. Extreme Duty Torque Drive Package. You get a hardened input shaft and drum assembly plus a hardened reaction shell and bearing. Every time you think there's nothing else that can be done to a 700R4, here it comes. These parts are made to with-stand way over 600 foot pounds of torque. Fits late 1987 up.
Drum: Starting with select cores, the input shaft / drum assembly is disassembled and visually inspected. Then super heated until fully expanded and then X-rayed for internal cracks. Heating the drum collapses any carbon pockets thus ultimately strengthening the cast and stabilizes it. This process is followed by a flux test to determine if any external fractures are present. If all checks well a specially machined alloy support ring is then married to the drum.
Shaft: The shaft is cold and hot chemically forge treated to a military standard Rockwell 38 hardness. Then stress relieved which gives the shaft double the strength of its stock counterpart. The parts are reassembled and spun balanced at 9500 RPM. This step insures that this assembled unit will spin true with absolutely no harmonic vibrations to disturb engaging parts. Stock factory units were never balanced to this degree. The input shaft / drum assembly comes with a specially machined over-run piston and high temperature seal.
Extreme Duty Shell / Bearing Assembly: A new reaction shell is provided with a reinforced hub that is approximately twice the thickness of an OEM reaction shell. The reaction shell is hardened then spun balanced at 9500 RPM. We replace the OEM plastic thrust washer with a roller thrust bearing to reduce heat. A specially machined and hardened rear planetary inner race is included to complete the assembly.
This is the hot new item on the street, for high performance, towing and heavy vehicles. Twice as strong as the stock parts.

Extreme Duty reaction carrier shaft with bearings (Torque Master Package). This shaft and hub attaches to the rear planet gear. The old style shaft uses thrust washers where as the new style shaft is machined to accept thrust needle bearings. This three piece kit comes with the shaft and two thrust needle bearings. This was the last part needed making it possible to build the entire transmission without the use of thrust washers. Ask our competition if their transmission contains this part. This reaction carrier shaft was designed for the increased torque load of the 6.0L version of the Gen III V-8, as well as Corvette's LS6 engine. Fit 1982 to 2004, 700R4, 4L60E and 4L65E transmissions.

Extreme Duty planet gears with 5 pinion gears. These two planet gears (19X and 19XX) are twenty years past due, this has always been a weak point on the 700R4 transmissions. These are new 4L65E OEM planet gears, not after market or GM rejects. After market five pinion planets will not work. These 5 pinion 2002 type GM gears are at least 25% stronger than the old type. The use of five pinion gears for the input and reaction gear sets spreads the torque load so that less of the load is held by any one gear. These gears are made of powdered metal, which GM claims allows for a higher overall strength. This five pinion reaction carrier was designed for the increased torque load of the 6.0L version of the Gen III V-8, as well as Corvette's LS6 engine. (After market 5 pinion planet gears are not a strong as OEM 4 pinion planet gears.)

It has the heavy duty thick anchors on both ends. Alto is pleased to announce a new Carbon lined 2-4 band for the GM 700R4 family of transmissions. This new band will retro back to the 1982 700R4 and will also fit the 2005 4L65E and all the transmissions in between. Both of the band anchors have been hardened to ensure durability. The Carbon lining is up to the task of any application that these transmissions are used for. #11. 700R4 / 4L60E / 4L65E oversize Alto Carbon or Red Eagle 2-4 PowerBand. These bands are 3/8 (2 5/8") of an inch wider than the stock band and has 15% more apply area. They also have a 60% thicker welded case anchor. The Carbon fiber bands have the firmer shift of the two. These two bands are sold with a new band drum as a two piece kit.
